phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and allows the chambers to fill
Today I offer an appreciation
to the lub-dub
lub-dub, lub-dub
of that swishy muscle
protected in casing of ribs
under your furry chest
warm, against my cheek
This stoic machine
generating vacillations in pressure
audibly priming and pumping
life, again and again
Each a miracle - heart and man
A note about this poem: Alden’s diagnosis has offered a challenge to each of us individually and to our partnership. When we start with appreciation, we thrive.
